Abstract

Survey results are based on responses from 66 percent of the personnel assigned in the AFSC 552X5 career ladder. Thirty-six percent of the total sample entered the plumbing career ladder by completion of the resident training course. Thirty percent entered by direct duty assignment without a bypass test. Over 75 percent of the survey respondents indicated that their jobs were interesting. Even higher percentages felt that their talents and training were effectively utilized. These measures of job satisfaction are considerably above the averages reported by respondents to 30 surveys completed in 1974. Actual reenlistment for FY75 varied somewhat from reenlistment intentions as reported by first term, second term and career enlistment groups. Actual rates of reenlistment for FY75 were considerably higher for second term and career groups. The first term rate was slightly lower than the survey results indicated. The primary factors in grouping jobs within the career ladder were supervisory tasks and number of tasks performed. There were no groupings which corresponded to functional assignment, command, or equipment used. Time in the career field was only a factor, in that the number of tasks performed increases as time in the field increases and the gradual addition of supervisory tasks with increases in career field time.
