Abstract

We examined 27 patients who had worn high water content hydrogel contact lenses in one eye only for an average of 62 ± 29 months (means ± SD). The stroma of the lens-wearing eye was found to be significantly thinner (p < 0.05) than that of the contralateral eye after lens-induced oedema was allowed to subside. Recovery had not occurred after 33 days. We conclude that contact lenses can induce stromal thinning.
