Abstract

William Sellew (1853-1909) was a civilian scout for General Nelson A. Miles and General Armstrong Custer; a prospector; freighter; rancher; hotel owner; and a constable in Neihart, Montana Territory. His papers (1872-1909) include typescript copies of biographical writings and correspondence with his mother and other family members in Connecticut. [Transcript copies only.].<br />This collection consists of biographical writings and typescript copies of correspondence (1872-1909) with his mother in Connecticut. (Small Collection 331).

Albert L. Sellew, Hartford, CN; 1936; AC1971-21., William Roland Sellew was born in Glastenbury, Connecticut, in 1853, the son of Roland and Hansey Ann Sellew. He traveled to Montana Territory in the spring of 1868. Through the years, Sellew was a trapper, prospector, freighter, rancher, hotel owner, and constable for the town of Neihart. He also served as a scout and hunter for General Nelson A. Miles and the Fifth Infantry, and for General Armstrong Custer. In 1882, Sellew started a post office and town named Kibbev and served as postmaster for several years. William Sellew died on February 28, 1909.
