Abstract

Engraved view of Dunnose on the south eastern coast of the Isle of Wight, England.<br />First and only edition of the most important published work of Sir Henry Englefield, antiquary and writer on science, with additional observations on the strata of the Island, and their continuation in the adjacent parts of Dorsetshire. By Thomas Webster. The work concerned as much with historic architecture and picturesque landscape as with geology. It consists of 47 engraved plates, 9 of them folding, one hand colored, and 3 folding maps, one hand-colored, including 1 plan and 1 cross section. Views and maps engraved by W. and G. Cooke and J. Walker, from Original Drawings by Sir H. Englefield and T. Webster. Half-title bound in. Includes xxvii pages of preface and explanation of the plates, 238 pages of descriptive text, 4 pages of index. Bound in dark reddish-brown half morocco covers with title “Englefield Isle of Wight” in gilt in on spine.
