Abstract

The drug losartan is more effective than atenolol in lowering blood pressure in patients with systolic high blood pressure, according to a study of 1,326 patients. Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers. Although both drugs lowered blood pressure, patients who took losartan were less likely to have a stroke, develop diabetes, or die from cardiovascular disease.
