pH-dependent expression of periplasmic proteins and amino acid catabolism in Escherichia coli

Results reveal that expression of 22 proteins is affected by pH in Escherichia coli cells grown over a range of pHs from acid through base. Also, high-pH induces 3 genes, suggesting that E. coli modulates multiple transporters and amino acid consumption pathways to minimize drastic pH shift of the external conditions.
