On the trail of early nonstandard grammar: an electronic corpus of Southern U.S. antebellum overseers' letters

Almost all pre-Civil War Southern plantation overseers were semiliterate working white men, and a survey of over 500 of their letters shows how they developed a variety of nonstandard dialects. Further research is necessary to determine whether these variations are individual, regional, or include other influences.
