Abstract
- Texts of Italian cantatas from the 17th century have traditionally been regarded as intentionally insincere but actually emphasized ingenuity and wit more than emotional revelation. Their original audience probably regarded cantatas as exhibitions of rhetorical skill and playful attitudes.
