The evolution of federal and state policies for assessing and supporting kinship caregivers

This article examines federal and state practices regarding policymaking for kinship care. The authors, analyzing data collected from a national survey completed by child welfare administrators, found that 10 states required kinship care to meet the same standards as non-kinship care, 41 states offered at least one assessment standard that was different from non-kinship care, and 25 of the 41 states provided some form of financial support.
