Abstract

The hydrolytic catalysis of the mutant subtilisin, Bacillus protease N', with a low-barrier hydrogen bond between the aspartate and histidine residues, is about 8-fold reduced than that of wild-type enzyme. Data indicate that the hydrogen bond is not required for enhanced activity of subtilisin.
