Abstract

This article attempts to critically evaluate the role of disc jockeys in the history of popular media, suggesting that their autonomy was limited by pressures form the record industry and station management, which contradicted the democratic ideology of the broadcasting industry. The author asserts that DJs were not neutral, but were complicit in the efforts to give undifferentiated commodities symbolic capital.
