Regulation of Staphylococcus aureus type 5 and type 8 capsular polysaccharides by CO(sub)2

Results indicate that carbon dioxide reduces the expression of capsular polysaccharide type 5 at the transcriptional level in Staphylococcus aureus. Regulation of capsular polysaccharide type 8 expression is strain dependent, suggesting that genetic background determines the carbon dioxide response.
