Patent statistics and social science research

Research is presented on patent statistics within the framework of social science research using two methodologies, simple regression and a complex approach that models disturbances in a series. The authors posit that regression is appropriate for large annual patent issuances, but that examinations of innovation at the industry or company level requires the complex approach.
