Spending priorities and democratic rule in Latin America

Abstract
- This article examines government military and non-military spending of Latin American countries that have shifted to a democratic rule. The authors, applying a budgetary model, maintain that Latin American democratization demonstrates more civilian spending than military spending, whereas previously military spending was a priority.
