Alternative translation initiation produces a short form of a spore coat protein in Bacillus subtilis

Research reveals a translation mechanism for the production of structural components of the endospore coat of Bacillus subtilis. Data indicate that expression of the shorter form 30-kilodalton SafA protein arises from translation initiation at codon 164 and overproduction of this protein compromises sporulation.
