Abstract

The role of scandal in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's 'Discourse on the Sciences and Arts' ('First Discourse') is discussed. Topics include the system as grounded in scandal, the meaning of scandal, the 'Prosopopeia of Fabricius,' the 'First Discourse,' the Athens/Sparta contrast, the logic of Rousseau's position, and scandal as both forbidden and necessary.
