Broadening Russia's borders? The nationalist challenge of the Congress of Russian Communities

Abstract

This article addresses the activities of the Congress of Russian Communities (KRO), a nationalist organization whose aim is to reunite former Soviet states into an expanded Russian state. Issues include Russian sense of identity; the KRO's ideology, particularly its commitment to reunification; the largely unsuccessful promotion of national minority positions for Russians outside the Russian Federation and homeland positions within it; comparison of the KRO with the Liberal Democratic Party and the Communist Party are given.
