Abstract

This article discusses the commemoration of the 1899-1902 Boer War in South Africa since the transition in government in 1994; popular war remembrance has shifted since the end of apartheid, with the focus no longer on the 'white man's war' of an imperial era, but acknowledging that both blacks and whites suffered. Many Afrikaans are outraged with the British for their use of concentration camps and other war atrocities, and demand an apology and retribution; many blacks feel that it has little significance to their own history since it was a conflict between whites.
