Brownfields over the years: from definition to sustainable reuse

Abstract

Urban development is often confronted with a lack of available space. Brownfield sites offer great potential for sustainable urban planning because of their often-central location and the benefits associated with their redevelopment. Although the interest in brownfield regeneration has led to a lot of research on this topic, there is not yet a comprehensive review of brownfield research. In this review, we analyze the research on brownfields and provide a picture of the published case studies. We focus primarily on brownfields research in the United States, Europe, and People's Republic of China. This exploratory research is based on an analysis of the published scientific literature available in the Web of Science database. Initially used in North America, the term 'brownfield' quickly became popular in the rest of the world, particularly in Europe. However, with the exception of the United States, there is no specific legislation for these sites; their protection is often based indirectly on directives or laws related to soil pollution, biodiversity, or the environment. The perception of the potential use of brownfield sites varies considerably from one part of the world to another, and international collaborations among researchers from different parts of the world remain limited. Most of the described reuses of brownfield sites are forms of soft reuse (53%), and the type of reuse of a site depends more on the surrounding urbanization levels and the specific region than on the past use of a brownfield site. Despite the continued interest in the rehabilitation of these sites, especially due to the increasing demand for nature in the city following the COVID-19 crisis, many questions regarding the future of brownfield sites remain unanswered. The factors influencing their successful redevelopment are unclear, and further research is urgently needed to ensure a truly sustainable re-use of these sites. Les friches industrielles offrent un grand potentiel pour la planification urbaine durable en raison de leur emplacement souvent central et des avantages associes a leur reamenagement. Bien que l'interet pour la regeneration des friches industrielles ait conduit a de nombreuses recherches sur ce sujet, il n'existe pas encore de synthese complete de la recherche sur les friches industrielles. Dans cet article de synthese, les auteurs analysent la recherche sur les friches industrielles et brossent un tableau des etudes de cas publiees. Ils se concentrent principalement sur la recherche sur les friches industrielles aux Etats-Unis, en Europe et en Chine. Cette recherche exploratoire est basee sur une analyse de la litterature scientifique publiee disponible dans la base de donnees Web of Science. Initialement utilise en Amerique du Nord, le terme<< de friche industrielle>>est rapidement devenu populaire dans le reste du monde, notamment en Europe. Cependant, a l'exception des Etats-Unis, il n'existe pas de legislation specifique pour ces sites; leur protection est souvent basee indirectement sur des directives ou des lois liees a la pollution des sols, a la biodiversite ou a l'environnement. La perception de l'utilisation potentielle des friches industrielles varie considerablement d'une region du monde a l'autre, et les collaborations internationales entre chercheurs de differentes parties du monde restent limitees. La plupart des reutilisations decrites des friches industrielles sont des formes de reutilisation douce (53 %), et le type de reutilisation d'un site depend davantage des niveaux d'urbanisation environnants et de la region specifique que de l'utilisation anterieure d'une friche industrielle. Malgre l'interet continu pour la rehabilitation de ces sites, notamment en raison de la demande croissante de nature en ville apres la crise de la COVID-19, de nombreuses questions concernant l'avenir des friches industrielles restent sans reponse. Les facteurs influencant la reussite de leur reamenagement ne sont pas clairs, et des recherches supplementaires sont necessaires de toute urgence pour assurer une reutilisation reellement durable de ces sites.
