Abstract

A simplified mathematical model has been developed for finding lattice energies of binary group I and II ionic compounds. It uses the Solver technique to estimate the empirical constants. Knowing the crystal structure or actual lattice parameters is not necessary. Students can focus on basic electrostatics, involving moles of ions pre empirical formula, ion charge, and self-consistent ionic radii. Surprisingly good agreement with Born-Haber cycle lattice energies was found.
