'Blending' and an interpretation of haiku: a cognitive approach

Abstract: Two haiku texts from Basho's 'Oku no Hosomichi' are analyzed using the 'blending' model of Mark Turner and Gilles Fauconnier. Metaphors in the haiku include 'time is a traveler,' 'nature is human' and 'people are nature'. The role of common background knowledge is also considered as it informs the reading of the haiku.
