Abstract

Intel Corp 80386 microprocessor-based microcomputers are the most appropriate choice for desktop computing.The Compaq Deskpro 386 introduced in Sep 1986 was the first entry on the market.The price of 80386 systems has fallen since that time. The 80386 systems are preferred by corporations now that the price is lower and that the release of the new OS-2 operating system is imminent. The future of 80286-based machines, price, Compaq's Deskpro 386, IBM's Micro-Channel bus structure, the computer industry in general, AST Research's AST-386 microcomputer, Micro-Channel compatibles, the Compaq bus architecture, the OS-2 environment, operating environment options, OS-2 software availability, networks, Unix and upgrading a PC to 386 status, are discussed.
