Abstract

Gelatin sponges can be used to plug up holes in the uterus and fetal membranes after fetal surgery. The sponge is placed inside the surgical instrument and is kept in the hole by a plunger as the instrument is withdrawn. Surgeons sometimes operate on the fetus to correct certain abnormalities.
