Abstract

The UK government is developing more detailed national standards for boarding schools. These standards, which are currently in draft form, may lead to individual local authorities being stricter in some areas of inspection and less strict in others. They place emphasis on more detailed checking of all employees in boarding houses and on more child protection procedures. Boarding schools are investing heavily in modernization, but there are now only 72,000 boarders across the UK, from more than 100,000 in 1989.
