The day of the watchdog

The Labour government in the UK has initiated a campaign of increased audit and inspection in the public sector as part of regulatory reforms. Oversight is on the rise in the National Health Service, the Office of Standards in Education and other government agencies. Service-specific inspectors have already been assigned at magistrates courts, the fire brigade, the police and social services departments. Labour is planning for new inspectorates for housing, youth justice and children's services.
