Abstract

'Multiservice WAN switches' were invented to support communication service providers' shift to providing multiservice networks. With this equipment, multiple protocols that include asynchronous communications and frame relay are supported with a single chassis, thus, giving service providers greater flexibility and investment protection. With the advent of Internet protocol, however, 'multiservice WAN switches' cannot anymore cope with the increase in data traffic.
