Abstract

The annual number of meningitis cases among 15-25 year olds has doubled since 1991, with increasing risks for students who live in college dormatories. During 1998-99, 83 cases were reported at college campuses, sparking a debate over the responsibility of the college to vaccinate its students. At a cost of approximately $65 per dose, most colleges feel they cannot afford the expense of offering free vaccines to their students.
