Abstract

Stage directions for actors in Shakespearian drama may have been inscribed in the play's dramatic dialogue. Dialogue from such plays as 'Othello' and 'Macbeth,' as well as an understanding of the configuration of the Globe Theater, provides clues to a dramaturgical stage management system. Such a system sheds light on the original conditions for Shakespearian theater, rehearsal procedures, and techniques used in other plays at the time.
