Abstract
- A universal of natural language is definiteness, a subcategory of nominal determination. Since Czech lacks an overt article, such as 'the,' discourse-anchored signals such as word order and intonation are used to mark definiteness. To act like the English 'this' or 'that,' Czech uses a deictically neutral determiner 'ten' for definite noun phrases.
