Abstract
- Jean Cocteau's play 'La Machine Infernale' owes much of its theme and story to Sophocles' 'Oedipus the King.' Cocteau emphasized the theme of incest more than the theme of patricide, but the play is deeply concerned with matters of predestination and irony. It is an important example of a modern tragedy whose roots are in classical literature.
