Tissue characterization in intravascular ultrasound images

A study was conducted to analyze an automated method to segment coronary wall and plaque, and determine plaque composition in individual intravascular ultrasound images and pullback image sequences. The determined areas of plaque were categorized in one of three classes. The method's performance was examined in vitro and in vivo against observer-defined independent standards. Results indicated a plaque classification accuracy of 90%.
