Medical research in New South Wales 1993-1996 assessed by Medline publication capture

Three-fourths of the published medical research from institutions in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, first appears in overseas medical journals. A researcher reviewed the 8,860 articles indexed in Medline from 1993-1996 which showed a NSW affiliation. University and teaching hospitals were more likely to publish within Australia, and research institutions almost exclusively published in foreign journals. Such articles were more commonly cited in other researcher's papers than articles published in Australian journals.
