Abstract

Researchers conducted a study to examine the effects of developments in antiretroviral therapy on HIV disease progression and survival in Australia. Researchers selected two cohorts of patients with HIV whose T cell counts had dropped to critical levels. HIV progression and survival were monitored over a three-year period. Results indicated that there were 43% fewer AIDS cases and 80% fewer deaths during the time antiretroviral therapy was available in Australia.
