Abstract

Apart from the obvious consequences of emotional disorders for the individuals concerned and their families, the direct and indirect costs to business, the community and the tax-paying public are very heavy. This article documents these costs and describes some of the prevention and rehabilitation measures, particularly Employee Assistance Programmes, that are being taken by unions and employers in the United States. It argues that their extension would result in reduced overall health costs both to corporations and to the community at large. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
