Abstract

The essential oil from the stem bark and leaves of Popowia beddomeana, collected from the Western Ghats of Kerala, India are isolated by hydro distillation method and components are identified by GC/ MS. The main constituents are sesquiterpenes and cycloalkanes. The chemical profiles of the two oils are compared. The bark oil was tested against a panel of fifteen bacterial strains and six fungal strains by disc diffusion method. The oil inhibited the growth of test organisms at varying levels. The minimal inhibitory concentrations were also determined. Key words: Popowia beddomeana, Annonaceae, essential oil, stem bark, leaves, composition, antibacterial and antifungal activity.
