Abstract

A novel cell-based genome-wide in vitro bacterial-infection screen is conducted to investigate human variation in Salmonella-induced cell death in inflammatory disease. Results suggest that naturally selected variations in the loss-of-function allele of CARD8, an inhibitor of the proinflammatory protease caspase-1, can lead to different effects on human health depending on population size.
