Free-energy surfaces for liquid-phase reactions and their use to study the border between concerted and nonconcerted [alpha],[beta]-elimination reactions of esters and thioesters

Several liquid-phase density functional theory calculations are conducted to explain the different concerted and nonconcerted [alpha],[beta]-elimination reactions of esters, as well as thioesters. The compounds are shown to prefer the anti transition state more, as compared to the syn state.
