The dental treatment of patients with joint replacements: a position paper from the American Academy of Oral Medicine

An analysis of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' (AAOS) information statement in 2009 which recommended antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) for all total joint replacement patients, is presented. Findings show that the risk of experiencing drug reactions or drug-resistant bacterial infections does not justify the practice of using AP in patients with prosthetic joints.
