Abstract: The possible use of heterologous expression of bacterial biosynthetic pathways in metagenomic DNA libraries to access new natural products for drug discovery is discussed. The study demonstrated the application of Myxococcus xanthus as a potential 'universal' host for heterologous expression of polyketide biosynthetic gene clusters.
