Abstract

* Two-year single-blind RCT investigates an early behavioral intervention to control weight gain in drug-naive patients taking antipsychotics. * patients in the intervention condition experience significantly less weight gain than those receiving usual care. * Authors believe weight-controlling behavioral interventions must last several months and include booster sessions over at least 2 years.<br />In a previous meta-analysis, Mario Alvarez-Jimenez and colleagues found nonpharmacological weight-management interventions to be effective in reducing antipsychotic-induced weight gain, compared to treatment as usual (Alvarez-Jimenez et al., 2008b).
