Far-field observation of the radical profile of visible whispering-gallery modes in a single microdisk based on Si-nanocrystal/Si[O.sub.2] superlattices

Abstract

The radial profile of visible whispering gallery modes (WGM) from a single microdisk based on silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc) and Si[O.sub.2] superlattices is observed and it is calculated by solving the Maxwell equations by using boundary conditions. Simulations have shown major WGM field at the top/bottom surface of the disk and visible imperfections of the disk surface are shown by scanning electron microscopy and have produced surface scattering loss limiting the overall disk cavity Q factor.
