Abstract: A combination of diagnostic and quantitative PCR techniques is employed to explain the history and growth dynamics observed in the symbionts during the embryonic development of Hirudo verbana, the European medicinal leech. Leech development is shown to lead to diversity in the temporal establishment of the symbiont species.
