Abstract

An elastic continuum mechanics model is described for studying the elastic buckling of single- and double-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) subjected to hydrostatic pressure. The analysis of the effects of deformation modes and dimension of CNTs on their mechanical stability has shown that the critical pressure has dependence on the buckling mode, the diameter and aspect ratio of CNTs.
