Abstract

Major developments in the tax-preparation software industry have significant implications for the tax-preparation professionals. The acquisition of two software developers and the transition of the tax software industry to Windows require software users to adjust accordingly. A survey of 28 software companies found that 17 are already marketing a Windows version of their products while 10 intend to introduce a Windows product by 2001. Tax preparers should therefore make plans for switching from their DOS systems. Aside from these developments, the potential of electronic filing of tax returns, although not yet widely practiced, can also have serious repercussions on tax preparers. Software companies believe that electronic filing can be popularized by the IRS if it abandons all paper requirements, market electronic filing and cooperate with states to offer statewide electronic filing.
