Abstract

The food processing industry has been consistent in depending on natural gas for its fuel source because it is reliable, relatively inexpensive and does not harm the environment. An example of the effective use of natural gas can be found in Knouse Foods Cooperative of Adams County, PA. Previously, the startup of its boilers for cooking apples was slow such that it required three hrs before generating enough heat for use. The boilers were replaced in 1992 with the installation of the 1000 HP Donlee Turbofire XL boiler which required only 30 to 45 min startup.<br />America's food processors function in a maelstrom of change: changing consumer tastes, changing nutritional values and constantly-changing competitive pressures.
