A demonstration of the synthetic potential of pyridinium salt photochemistry by its application to a sterocontrolled synthesis of (+)-mannostatin A

Research was conducted to examine procedures for the enantioselective synthesis of functionalized aminocyclopentenes and their application to the preparation of biomedically relevant cyclic and acyclic targets. The procedure developed for the synthesis of (+)-mannostatin A was modestly concise and economical in addition to its ability to highlighting the preparative utility of pyridinium salt photochemistry. It was also observed to have the flexibility necessary for the preparation of various regiochemical and stereochemical analogues of the natural product.
