Abstract

Teachers deem direct instruction as either a bane or a boon depending on their perception of knowledge and learning. Teachers who emphasize the attainment of particular facts consider direct instruction as the most efficient mode of teaching. However, for those concerned with students' intellectual growth and independence, this method of teaching is more of a handicap as it encourages dependence on the teacher rather than on the learners' own capacity to seek information. Use of this approach should therefore be guided by the specific learning objectives and goals.
