Abstract

Diabetes and diabetes-related risk factors increase the risk of diabetes complications, particularly if the disease is controlled poorly. Three diabetes risk factors were examined m this study: obesity (body mass index), hypertension (systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure), and hyperlipidemia (cholesterol and triglyceride). The Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1982-1984), the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000, and NHANES 2001-2002 were utilized to examine and compare trends and differences in diabetes-related risk factor variables in Mexican Americans with diabetes.<br />Mexican Americans are the largest Hispanic subgroup in the United States, composing 28.3 million (64.3%) of the total Hispanic population of 44.2 million (U.S. Census Bureau, 20060.
