Abstract

The Centre for Economic Performance survey into performance-related pay for public sector workers found many head teachers opposed the system yet around 60% received pay awards linked to their performance. More than 70% of civil servants were found to support performance-related pay. Supporters of the system felt it gave added motivation whilst those against performance pay felt it could be abused and manipulated by senior management. Almost 50% of civil service managers felt performance pay was successful in increasing productivity of the workers and identifying expectations.
