Abstract

The movement of banded sub-adult Hawaiian stilts, Himantopus mexicanus knudseni, in the various Hawaiian islands they inhabit was tracked to determine the short-term, predispersal movements in this species. The movement patterns were recorded based on sex, age and season. Results reveal that Hawaiian stilts are capable of extensive, even inter-island movements, throughout the year. Males are more predisposed to move probably because they are looking for breeding opportunities.
